About SsangYong Korando
The SsangYong Korando is a South Korean SUV nameplate introduced in 1983. Its character has changed substantially over time: early models were compact, utility-focused off-road vehicles, while later generations adopted the five-door crossover format preferred by family-car buyers. Production paused after 2006 before the name returned in 2010.
The distinctive 1996 generation retained a traditional SUV layout and three-door bodywork. The 2010 model marked a major shift towards a road-oriented compact crossover, with front-wheel drive as the basis and all-wheel drive available on some versions. A further redesign arrived in 2019, bringing more conventional styling, a roomier five-seat cabin and updated safety and infotainment technology.
Powertrain availability differs by year and market. Korando models have been offered with petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and two- or four-wheel drive. The battery-electric Korando e-Motion was also sold in selected countries.
Within SsangYong’s range, the Korando occupies the compact SUV class below the larger Rexton. It is mainly known for practical interior space, useful equipment and the availability of all-wheel drive without the size of a full-scale SUV. Following SsangYong Motor’s change to KG Mobility, newer examples may carry KGM branding, while retaining the Korando model name.
