About SsangYong Kallista
The SsangYong Kallista is a rare two-seat roadster produced in South Korea in the early 1990s. It was derived from the British Panther Kallista after SsangYong acquired Panther and transferred production equipment to its Pyeongtaek plant. The model retained the original car’s front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and distinctive open-top design.
Its appearance was deliberately traditional, with separate front wings, running boards, a long bonnet and a compact cabin recalling British sports cars of the 1930s. Beneath the retro bodywork were comparatively modern Ford-sourced mechanical components. SsangYong offered 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 2.9-litre V6 versions, generally with a five-speed manual transmission; an automatic was also available with the V6. Depending on specification, the body used glass-reinforced plastic or aluminium panels over a separate steel chassis.
The Kallista occupied an unusual position in a range otherwise associated mainly with four-wheel-drive vehicles and commercial models. It was a low-volume specialist car rather than a mainstream sports model, and production remained extremely limited. Today, it is known chiefly for its rarity, Anglo-Korean background, hand-built character and combination of classic roadster styling with established Ford running gear.
