About SsangYong Istana
The SsangYong Istana is a light commercial van and minibus introduced in 1995. Produced in South Korea until 2003, it was developed from the Mercedes-Benz MB100 platform as part of SsangYong’s technical relationship with Mercedes-Benz.
Unlike the sport utility vehicles for which SsangYong became better known, the Istana served commercial operators, institutions and larger families. It occupied a practical role in the range, providing passenger and cargo capacity in a compact, cab-forward body.
Versions included panel vans and passenger minibuses, with configurations ranging from two seats to larger 9-, 12- and 15-seat layouts. Most models used a Mercedes-derived 2.9-litre, five-cylinder diesel engine with a five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. Equipment and seating arrangements varied by market and intended use.
The Istana was also sold under Daewoo branding in certain countries, while related vehicles appeared with Mercedes-Benz MB100 or MB140 badges in parts of Asia and other export markets. Its basic design later continued in China under different names.
The model is mainly known for its spacious cabin, flexible body options and straightforward diesel mechanical package. Within SsangYong’s historically SUV-focused line-up, it remains a distinctive example of the company’s involvement in vans and passenger transport vehicles.
