About SsangYong Chairman
The SsangYong Chairman was a full-size luxury saloon produced in South Korea from 1997 to 2017. It served as SsangYong’s flagship passenger car and was unusual within a range otherwise centred on SUVs, four-wheel-drive vehicles and utility models. The Chairman was developed primarily for the South Korean executive-car market, with limited sales in selected export regions.
Early versions used Mercedes-Benz-derived engineering, including a rear-wheel-drive platform and licensed petrol engines. The original model received several updates and was later marketed as the Chairman H. In 2008, the larger and more modern Chairman W joined the range, offering a choice of six-cylinder engines and, in higher specifications, a 5.0-litre V8. Depending on version and market, the W was available with rear- or all-wheel drive.
Standard-wheelbase and extended-wheelbase limousine variants were produced, with the latter placing particular emphasis on rear passenger space. Across its various forms, the Chairman was known for formal styling, a comfort-oriented ride, spacious accommodation and extensive equipment. It competed as a lower-volume alternative to established Korean and imported luxury saloons, rather than as a mainstream model. Production ended as SsangYong concentrated its resources on SUVs and crossovers.
