About Scion xD
The Scion xD is a five-door subcompact hatchback sold in the United States for the 2008 through 2014 model years. It replaced the xA as Scion’s conventional small hatchback and sat below the larger, boxier xB in size. Within Toyota’s youth-focused Scion brand, the xD combined city-friendly dimensions with a more upright and practical body than the tC coupe.
All regular US-market xD models used front-wheel drive and a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 128 hp. Buyers could choose a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The model remained in a single generation, with changes centred mainly on equipment, colours, audio systems and minor styling details rather than major mechanical revisions.
Scion also offered several limited-production Release Series editions with distinctive paint, trim and accessories. A 10 Series version marked the brand’s tenth anniversary, while the final 2014 model added available two-tone paint and a standard touchscreen audio system.
The xD is known for easy manoeuvrability, a relatively roomy cabin for its footprint and the everyday flexibility of a rear hatch and folding rear seats. It occupied the practical, affordable end of the Scion range, appealing to drivers who wanted a compact urban car with more personality and customisation potential than a typical economy hatchback. Production ended in 2014 without a direct Scion-badged successor.
