About Scion xA
The Scion xA is a five-door subcompact hatchback that helped launch Toyota’s youth-focused Scion brand in the United States. Introduced in California in 2003 for the 2004 model year and later sold nationwide, it was developed from the Japanese-market Toyota ist. It served as the more conventionally styled alternative to the box-shaped xB.
The xA used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Buyers could choose a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Its compact dimensions suited urban driving, while the rear hatch and folding back seat provided greater cargo flexibility than a small saloon. An upright seating position and good outward visibility also contributed to its practical character.
Like other early Scion models, the xA followed a largely single-specification sales approach rather than offering a wide trim range. Personalisation came through accessories and limited Release Series editions with distinctive colours and equipment. Changes during its short run were modest, so all versions remained closely related in design and engineering.
Positioned as Scion’s entry-level small car, the xA was known for straightforward Toyota-based mechanicals, manageable size and everyday versatility. It was replaced by the larger and more powerful Scion xD for the 2008 model year.
