About Scion FR-S

The Scion FR-S is a compact rear-wheel-drive sports coupe sold in the United States for the 2013 to 2016 model years. Jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, it joined Scion as the brand’s performance-focused halo model. Its name refers to its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, sport layout. When Scion was discontinued, the model moved to the Toyota range for 2017 under the 86 name.

The FR-S uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Rather than emphasising high output, its design focuses on low weight, a low centre of gravity, balanced handling and direct driver feedback. Rear-wheel drive and a standard limited-slip differential further separated it from Scion’s other vehicles.

Most examples share the same core mechanical specification, with model-year updates generally limited to equipment and detail changes. Variations included the premium-oriented Monogram Series and the limited Release Series 1.0 and 2.0, which added distinctive colours, trim, wheels and selected performance or comfort features.

The FR-S is best known as an accessible enthusiast car with compact dimensions and responsive handling. Within Scion’s lineup, it occupied a more specialised position than the brand’s other coupes, prioritising cornering balance and driver involvement over cabin space or straight-line speed.
