About Eagle Wagon

The Eagle Wagon was a compact four-wheel-drive station wagon developed by American Motors Corporation. Introduced for the 1980 model year as part of the AMC Eagle range, it combined a passenger-car body based on the AMC Concord with increased ground clearance and a drivetrain designed to improve traction in snow, rain and other difficult conditions.

Unlike a conventional off-road utility vehicle, the Eagle Wagon retained the seating, enclosed cargo area and road manners of a family estate car. Most examples used AMC’s 4.2-litre inline-six engine, although four-cylinder versions were also offered during parts of the production run. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, while the four-wheel-drive system evolved during the model’s life.

The wagon was the most enduring body style in a wider Eagle family that also included two- and four-door cars, the SX/4 hatchback and the Kammback. Wagon variations included standard models, the appearance-focused Sport package and the more richly equipped Limited, with specifications changing by year.

After Chrysler acquired AMC in 1987, the wagon continued briefly for the 1988 model year under the simplified Eagle Wagon name. It occupied an unusual position between traditional estate cars and Jeep-style vehicles and is now chiefly known as an early example of the crossover concept.
