About De Tomaso Pantera
The De Tomaso Pantera is a two-seat, mid-engined sports coupe introduced in 1971 as the successor to the Mangusta. Styled at Ghia by Tom Tjaarda and built around a steel monocoque, it combined Italian design and chassis engineering with a Ford V8 and five-speed ZF transaxle. It became De Tomaso’s best-known and most widely produced model.
Developed during De Tomaso’s partnership with Ford, the Pantera was sold in the United States through Lincoln-Mercury dealers from 1971 to 1974. It occupied a distinctive position as a relatively accessible alternative to contemporary Italian exotics, offering wedge-shaped styling and mid-engine performance with familiar American power. De Tomaso continued limited production for other markets into the early 1990s.
Major variations included the original Pantera, the more refined Pantera L or Lusso, and the sportier GTS. Later models included the wide-bodied GT5, the further developed GT5-S and the substantially updated Pantera Si.
The Pantera is especially known for its Italian-American character, low proportions, strong V8 performance and manual-only drivetrain. Specifications differ by year and market, and many surviving cars have been modified.
