About De Tomaso Longchamp
The De Tomaso Longchamp is a front-engined 2+2 grand tourer introduced in 1972 and produced in small numbers through the 1980s. Designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia, it combined sharply defined Italian bodywork with a 5.8-litre Ford Cleveland V8. The model used a shortened version of the Deauville saloon’s platform, with rear-wheel drive and a choice of three-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission.
Unlike the mid-engined Pantera, the Longchamp was conceived as a refined, high-performance touring car. Its market position was closer to luxury coupés from established European manufacturers, offering a leather-trimmed cabin, substantial equipment and strong V8 performance. Within the De Tomaso range, it provided a more formal and practical alternative to the brand’s sports cars while retaining the company’s characteristic mixture of Italian design and American power.
The original Series 1 was followed by an updated Series 2 around 1980. The more sporting GTS added wider wheels, flared wheel arches and revised suspension settings. A very rare open-top Spyder was also offered, with conversions carried out by Carrozzeria Pavesi. Total production amounted to only about 400 cars, making every version uncommon. The Longchamp is chiefly known for its angular styling, muscular drivetrain and unusual position as one of De Tomaso’s few front-engined production models.
