About De Tomaso Deauville
The De Tomaso Deauville is a four-door luxury saloon introduced in 1970 and produced in Modena from 1971 to 1985. It was an unusual model for a marque best known for sports cars and grand tourers, giving De Tomaso an entry in the same market as established high-performance luxury saloons.
Designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia, the Deauville combined Italian styling with a front-mounted 5.8-litre Ford Cleveland V8 related to the engine used in the Pantera. Rear-wheel drive, monocoque construction, fully independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes supported its blend of comfort, strong performance and long-distance ability.
Production cars are generally divided into early and late Series 1 versions and the Series 2 introduced in 1978. Changes mainly concerned bumpers, wheels, trim, cabin details and equipment rather than the basic design. Most examples were fitted with a three-speed automatic transmission. A unique estate car and a small number of armoured vehicles were also built.
Only about 244 Deauvilles were produced, making it much rarer than the Pantera. Within the De Tomaso range, it is known as the brand’s principal production luxury saloon and for combining American V8 power with Italian design and hand-built exclusivity.
