About Volvo XC40
The Volvo XC40 is a compact premium SUV introduced in 2017 as Volvo’s entry into the smaller luxury crossover class. It sits below the XC60 and XC90 in the brand’s SUV range, combining a city-friendly footprint with an elevated driving position, five-seat cabin and practical cargo capacity.
It was the first Volvo built on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), developed within the Geely Group. Customer production began at Volvo’s Ghent plant in Belgium in November 2017. The XC40 remains in its first generation, although a substantial styling and technology update arrived for the 2023 model year.
Powertrain choices have varied by country and model year. The range has included petrol and diesel engines, front- or all-wheel drive, plug-in hybrids and the battery-electric XC40 Recharge. Volvo later renamed the electric model EX40, while the XC40 continued in many markets with 48-volt mild-hybrid petrol power.
