About Volvo V40
The Volvo V40 name covers two distinct compact model lines. The first, introduced in 1995 and produced until 2004, was a five-door estate related to the first-generation S40 saloon. Built at the NedCar plant in the Netherlands, it brought Volvo’s safety and comfort priorities to a smaller, more accessible format. Versions ranged from economical petrol and diesel models to the turbocharged T4.
Volvo revived the name in 2012 for a five-door premium hatchback. Produced in Ghent, Belgium, until July 2019, this V40 became the brand’s main offering in the European compact segment, effectively consolidating the roles previously served by the C30, S40 and V50. It was positioned below Volvo’s larger saloons, estates and SUVs as an entry point to the range.
The later V40 was offered with several petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and a variety of equipment levels. R-Design models added a sportier appearance and chassis specification, while the V40 Cross Country combined raised ride height and rugged styling with optional all-wheel drive on selected versions and markets.
The model is particularly known for its compact dimensions, Scandinavian design and strong emphasis on occupant and pedestrian protection. The 2012 V40 introduced a production-car pedestrian airbag and also offered driver-assistance systems normally associated with larger Volvo models.
