About Volvo S40

The Volvo S40 is a compact four-door saloon produced from 1995 to 2012. It served as Volvo’s smaller, more accessible saloon, positioned below the brand’s larger executive models. The S40 combined manageable dimensions with the comfort, safety focus and restrained styling associated with Volvo.

Two generations were offered. The first, produced from 1995 to 2004, was developed through a joint venture with Mitsubishi and built at the NedCar plant in the Netherlands. It brought Volvo into the compact premium saloon market and was offered with petrol and diesel engines. Versions ranged from practical entry-level models to the turbocharged T4. The S40 also gained motorsport recognition through its success in touring car racing.

The second generation debuted in 2003 and was manufactured in Ghent, Belgium, until 2012. It adopted a more modern Volvo design, a stiffer body structure and an interior noted for its clean Scandinavian appearance. Depending on market and model year, buyers could choose four- or five-cylinder petrol engines, turbo diesels, manual or automatic transmissions, and front- or all-wheel drive. The turbocharged T5 was among the principal performance versions.

The S40 is known for offering traditional Volvo qualities in a compact format: solid construction, supportive seating, straightforward controls and a strong emphasis on occupant protection.
