About Volvo 960

The Volvo 960 was introduced in autumn 1990 for the 1991 model year and remained in production until 1997. It succeeded the 760 as Volvo’s flagship and sat above the closely related 940 in the range. Offered as a four-door saloon and five-door estate, it combined a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a more luxurious specification than Volvo’s mainstream models.

The 960 is most closely associated with Volvo’s aluminium, 24-valve inline-six engine, offered in 2.5- and 3.0-litre forms depending on year and market. Other region-specific engines were also available. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered, although availability varied. A substantial update for the 1995 model year brought revised exterior styling, an extensively redesigned chassis and an improved multi-link rear suspension with a transverse composite leaf spring.

The model had one main generation, divided into early and updated versions. Executive and limousine derivatives were offered in selected markets alongside the regular saloon and estate. In 1997, these body styles were renamed S90 and V90. The 960 is known for its spacious cabin, long-distance comfort, practical estate version, safety equipment and understated design. It represents the final development of Volvo’s large, rear-wheel-drive 900-series flagship formula.
