About Volvo 940

The Volvo 940 is a large rear-wheel-drive passenger car produced from 1990 to 1998. Introduced alongside the more upmarket 960, it replaced most versions of the 740 and continued Volvo’s established formula of spacious, upright saloons and estates with straightforward mechanical design.

The range consisted of a four-door saloon and five-door estate. It remained one model generation throughout its production life, although equipment, engines and safety features evolved. Depending on year and market, buyers could choose naturally aspirated or turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines, while some regions also received a six-cylinder turbo-diesel. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered, with badges such as GL, GLT and Turbo used during the model’s run.

Within the Volvo lineup, the 940 sat below the 960 as the more accessible large car, aimed at families, fleet users and buyers who valued space and durability over sporting character. The estate became especially notable for its broad, practical load area, while both body styles were associated with comfortable long-distance travel, good visibility and Volvo’s emphasis on occupant protection.

The 940 is also remembered as one of Volvo’s final rear-wheel-drive models. Its angular styling, robust construction and relatively simple engineering helped it become a familiar long-serving family and working vehicle in many markets.
