About Volvo 850
The Volvo 850 is a mid-size saloon and estate introduced in 1991. It marked a major technical change for Volvo, combining the brand’s traditional practical, upright design with front-wheel drive and a transversely mounted five-cylinder engine. The estate joined the range in 1993.
Produced as a single generation, the 850 occupied an important position between Volvo’s established rear-wheel-drive models and its later front-wheel-drive range. It introduced the Delta-link rear axle and Volvo’s Side Impact Protection System. Front-seat side airbags were added during the model’s production run.
The line included naturally aspirated GLT and GLE models, turbocharged Turbo or T-5 versions, the limited-production T-5R and the later 850 R. Depending on the market, buyers could also find a five-cylinder turbo-diesel and the 850 AWD, Volvo’s first production car with all-wheel drive. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered.
The 850 is especially known for its balance of passenger space, estate practicality, safety engineering and distinctive five-cylinder character. Its performance image was strengthened by the T-5R and R, as well as Volvo’s unusual use of an 850 estate in the 1994 British Touring Car Championship. The 850 was replaced in the 1997 model range by the S70 saloon and V70 estate.
