About Volvo 780
The Volvo 780 is a two-door luxury coupé developed as the flagship of Volvo’s 700 Series. Unveiled at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show, it followed the earlier 262C in Volvo’s line of limited-production Bertone coupés. Production ran from 1985 to 1990, with 8,518 examples built.
Italian design house Bertone styled and assembled the 780, while its engineering was largely based on the Volvo 760. The result combined recognisable Volvo proportions and rear-wheel-drive construction with a lower roofline, distinctive body panels and a more formal grand-touring character. Its model-specific interior featured extensive luxury trim and individually shaped rear seats for two passengers.
The 780 remained a single-generation model, although specifications evolved during its production life. Depending on market and year, it was offered with four-cylinder petrol engines, including turbocharged versions, a 2.8-litre V6 or a 2.4-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel. Four-speed automatic and four-speed manual transmissions with electric overdrive were available in selected markets.
Positioned above Volvo’s regular saloons and estates, the 780 emphasised comfort, exclusivity and long-distance refinement rather than outright sporting performance. It is best known for its Bertone styling, limited production, distinctive cabin and unusual place as an Italian-built luxury coupé within Volvo’s otherwise practical 1980s range.
