About Volvo 760
The Volvo 760 was a large, rear-wheel-drive executive car produced from 1982 to 1990. It launched Volvo’s 700 Series and served as the premium model in the range, positioned above the closely related 740 introduced later. The 760 was also an important commercial model for Volvo, strengthening the company’s position in the international prestige-car market during the 1980s.
Initially offered as a four-door saloon, the range gained a five-door estate in 1985. Both versions were distinguished by angular styling, a spacious cabin and a high level of equipment. Depending on year and market, power came from a V6 petrol engine, a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine or a six-cylinder turbo-diesel. Manual and automatic transmissions were available.
The 760 remained within one main model generation, although a substantial update arrived during 1987. It introduced revised front styling, numerous interior and mechanical changes, and independent multi-link rear suspension for the saloon. The model became known for long-distance comfort, practical packaging, strong performance in turbo versions and Volvo’s characteristic emphasis on occupant safety. More than 221,000 saloons and estates were built before the 760 was replaced by the Volvo 960 in 1990.
