About Volvo 740
The Volvo 740 is a rear-wheel-drive large family car from Volvo’s 700 Series. Introduced as a four-door saloon in 1984, it was developed from the more upmarket 760 and provided a less expensive, mainly four-cylinder alternative within the range. A five-door estate followed in 1985. Both body styles remained in production until 1992.
The 740 had one main generation, with detail changes and a modest exterior facelift for the 1989 model year. Most versions used naturally aspirated or turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engines. Six-cylinder diesel and turbodiesel models were also offered in some markets, along with manual and automatic transmissions. Trim levels, engine choices and equipment varied by country and model year.
Known for its angular design, spacious cabin and strong emphasis on safety and reliability, the 740 became a practical core model in Volvo’s line-up. The estate was especially notable for its generous, regularly shaped cargo area and family-focused versatility, while turbocharged versions added stronger performance without changing the car’s practical character. Production overlapped with the newer 940 from 1990, and the 940 fully replaced the 740 in 1992.
