About Volvo 480
The Volvo 480 is a compact four-seat sporting hatchback introduced in 1985, with production running from 1986 to 1995 at Volvo’s plant in Born, the Netherlands. Developed by Volvo’s Dutch subsidiary, it was the brand’s first series-produced front-wheel-drive car and used a transversely mounted engine. This made it an important technical step towards the layout later adopted across much of Volvo’s range.
Its low, wedge-shaped body, pop-up headlights and large glass tailgate gave the 480 a distinctive appearance. The rear design referenced the earlier Volvo 1800ES, while the overall format combined coupé-like styling with the access and versatility of a hatchback. Within Volvo’s compact line-up, it served as the more individual and sporting model.
The 480 remained in a single generation. Main versions included the 480 ES, the simpler 480 S and the higher-performance 480 Turbo. Engine choices comprised naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.7-litre four-cylinder units, followed by a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre option. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered, depending on version and market.
Sold mainly in Europe, the 480 was never officially launched in the United States despite early plans. A convertible was developed as a prototype but did not enter production. In total, 76,375 examples were built. The model is chiefly known for its unusual design, pioneering drivetrain and relatively advanced equipment for its period.
