About Volvo 460
The Volvo 460 is a compact four-door saloon produced from 1989 to 1996. It was the three-box counterpart to the Volvo 440 hatchback and formed part of the 400 Series alongside the 440 and 480 coupé. All three models shared a front-wheel-drive platform, marking Volvo’s move away from the rear-wheel-drive layout used by many of its larger cars at the time.
Developed and manufactured in Born, the Netherlands, the 460 was positioned below Volvo’s larger saloons. Its conventional boot, practical cabin and restrained, angular styling made it the more traditional member of the 400 Series. It was offered as a single generation, although a substantial update later in its production run brought revised exterior styling, interior improvements and added safety features.
Engine choices varied by year and market. The range included four-cylinder petrol units from 1.6 to 2.0 litres, a turbocharged 1.7-litre petrol engine and a 1.9-litre turbo diesel. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were available, with trim levels ranging from basic family models to better-equipped and sportier versions.
The 460 is known for combining compact dimensions with Volvo characteristics such as solid construction, stable handling and a strong emphasis on occupant safety. Later cars could include features such as anti-lock brakes, airbags and Volvo’s Side Impact Protection System. It was replaced by the S40, which continued Volvo’s presence in the compact saloon class.
