About Volvo 440
The Volvo 440 is a compact five-door hatchback produced from 1988 to 1996. Built in Born, the Netherlands, it gradually replaced the Volvo 340 as the brand’s mainstream compact model. It formed part of the 400 Series alongside the related 460 saloon and 480 sports coupé, sharing the 480’s transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.
The 440 remained within one model generation, although a substantial redesign for the 1994 model year introduced styling influenced by the larger Volvo 850. Its practical hatchback body featured a distinctive spoiler lip on the tailgate, while the cabin and split-folding rear seat supported everyday family use.
Engine availability varied by market and model year. The range included four-cylinder petrol units from 1.6 to 2.0 litres, a turbocharged 1.7-litre version and a 1.9-litre turbo-diesel. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were offered.
Positioned below Volvo’s larger saloons and estates, the 440 brought front-wheel drive, useful interior space and composed road manners to the company’s smaller-car range. It is chiefly known as a practical compact Volvo that helped bridge the rear-wheel-drive 300 Series and the later S40 and V40 generation.
