About Volvo 360
The Volvo 360 was the more powerful and better-equipped member of Volvo’s compact 300 Series. Introduced in autumn 1982, it was based on the Volvo 340 but distinguished by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a manual gearbox. Production continued through 1989, with the model built in the Netherlands by Volvo Car BV.
Available as a three-door or five-door hatchback and, from 1983, a four-door saloon, the 360 provided a smaller alternative to Volvo’s larger 200 Series cars. Its rear-wheel-drive layout used a rear-mounted transmission to improve weight distribution, together with De Dion rear suspension. This gave it a distinctive mechanical character within the compact family-car class.
The range included GL, GLE and GLT versions, although equipment and availability varied by market. The fuel-injected 360 GLT was the sportier variant, while the saloon placed greater emphasis on comfort and a separate luggage compartment. A mid-1980s update brought revised styling and detail changes, but the 360 remained a single model generation throughout its life.
The 360 is known for combining practical bodywork with traditional Volvo qualities such as a sturdy structure, straightforward controls and rear-wheel drive. It occupied the upper end of the 300 Series, offering more performance and equipment than the 340 without moving into Volvo’s larger-car range.
