About Volvo 340
The Volvo 340 was a compact family car and the main lower-powered model in Volvo’s rear-wheel-drive 300 Series. Introduced under the 340 name in 1982, it evolved from the earlier 343 and 345 launched in 1976. The series originated as a DAF project and was built by Volvo’s Dutch subsidiary at Born in the Netherlands.
Available as a three-door or five-door hatchback and, later, a four-door saloon, the 340 gave Volvo a practical entry in Europe’s important compact-car market. It sat below the larger 240 Series and below the more powerful, better-equipped Volvo 360 within the 300 range.
The 340 remained a single model generation, although several facelifts updated its styling, interior and equipment. Depending on year and market, versions used 1.4- or 1.7-litre petrol engines, while a 1.6-litre diesel was offered in selected countries. Buyers could choose manual gearboxes or DAF-derived Variomatic continuously variable transmission on applicable models.
A front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with the transmission mounted at the rear helped distribute weight across the car. The 340 became known for its roomy hatchback body, straightforward controls, durable construction and distinctive mechanical layout. Production continued until 1991, overlapping with the newer front-wheel-drive Volvo 440 that replaced the 300 Series in Volvo’s compact line-up.
