About Volvo 260
The Volvo 260 was the six-cylinder, more upmarket branch of the 200 Series. Introduced in 1974 as the successor to the Volvo 164, it used the same basic rear-wheel-drive platform as the 240 but added a more formal front design, higher equipment levels and an aluminium V6 developed with Peugeot and Renault. Engine capacity varied by year and market, with 2.7- and 2.8-litre versions offered.
Rather than progressing through separate generations, the 260 evolved through updates during its production life. Its main variants were the 264 four-door saloon and 265 five-door estate. The uncommon 262 was a two-door saloon, while the distinctive 262C was a four-seat luxury coupé built by Bertone in Italy from 1977 to 1981. The saloon was succeeded by the Volvo 760 in 1982, although the 265 estate remained available until 1985.
Positioned above the four-cylinder 240, the 260 served as one of Volvo’s flagship ranges. It is known for its upright styling, spacious cabin, substantial construction and strong emphasis on occupant safety. The 265 combined six-cylinder power with Volvo’s established estate-car practicality, while the limited-production 262C gave the range a more exclusive character.
