About Volkswagen XL1

The Volkswagen XL1 is a two-seat, low-volume plug-in hybrid created as an engineering showcase rather than a conventional mass-market model. Presented in production form in 2013, it developed Volkswagen’s earlier “one-litre car” experiments into a road-legal customer vehicle focused almost entirely on reducing energy use.

Customer production ran from 2014 to 2016 at Volkswagen’s Osnabrück plant in Germany. The programme comprised 250 vehicles, including 200 customer cars and 50 retained by Volkswagen. The XL1 had one generation and one main production specification, without the usual range of engines or trim levels. The related XL Sport remained a concept rather than a series-production version.

Its rear-mounted plug-in hybrid system combined a 0.8-litre two-cylinder TDI diesel engine with an electric motor and seven-speed DSG transmission. A carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic structure helped limit weight to 795 kg, while the narrow teardrop body, covered rear wheels and camera-based exterior mirrors produced a drag coefficient of 0.189. Volkswagen quoted up to 50 km of electric range and combined NEDC consumption of 0.9 litres per 100 km. Within the brand’s lineup, the XL1 occupied a unique position as an experimental efficiency flagship, notable for its unusual design, advanced materials and extreme rarity.
