About Volkswagen Tharu
The Volkswagen Tharu is a compact five-seat SUV developed mainly for China and launched in 2018. Built by the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture, it replaced the older locally sold Tiguan and became part of Volkswagen’s expansion into China-specific SUV segments. It uses the brand’s modular MQB architecture.
The core Tharu has remained in its first generation, receiving a substantial exterior, interior and powertrain update in 2023. Petrol versions have included several turbocharged engine choices, with front-wheel drive standard on many variants and 4Motion all-wheel drive available on selected higher-output models. A battery-electric e-Tharu was introduced in 2020. The Tharu name has also been used for the smaller Tharu XR, launched in China in 2024 as a separate derivative rather than a second generation of the main model.
Within Volkswagen’s range, the Tharu sits between smaller urban crossovers and larger Tiguan-family SUVs. It is known for upright styling, a practical passenger compartment, useful cargo capacity and familiar Volkswagen controls. Although primarily associated with China, the Tharu has also been offered in selected export markets, including the Philippines. Equipment and engines vary by year and country.
