About Volkswagen Tera
The Volkswagen Tera is a subcompact crossover SUV developed by Volkswagen do Brasil for Latin American markets. Revealed in March 2025, it is built at the Taubaté plant in São Paulo state and exported to markets across the region. Within Volkswagen’s line-up, it serves as the entry-level SUV, positioned between the Polo hatchback and the larger Nivus crossover. It is sold as the Volkswagen Tengo in South Africa.
The Tera is currently in its first generation and uses the Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0 architecture. It has a five-door body designed to combine city-friendly dimensions with the raised driving position and practical cabin expected from a small SUV. Engine, transmission and equipment choices vary by country. In Brazil, the range has included MPI, 170 TSI, Comfort and High versions, with naturally aspirated or turbocharged 1.0-litre flex-fuel engines and manual or automatic transmissions.
The model is known for its modern exterior design, digital cabin features and available driver-assistance technology. It also achieved a five-star Latin NCAP safety rating. Developed and produced entirely in Brazil, the Tera plays an important role as a high-volume regional model aimed at buyers moving from small hatchbacks into Volkswagen’s SUV range.
