About Volkswagen Taro
The Volkswagen Taro was a one-tonne-class pickup sold in Europe from 1989 to 1997. It was developed through a cooperation agreement with Toyota and was closely based on the fifth-generation Toyota Hilux. Production began at Volkswagen’s Hanover plant on 10 January 1989, giving the brand a conventional pickup for commercial users and filling a gap in its utility-vehicle range.
The Taro remained a single-generation model throughout its production run. The range included rear-wheel-drive 4x2 versions and four-wheel-drive variants, with single-cab, extended-cab and double-cab body styles available at different times. Four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines were offered, depending on model year, specification and market.
Unlike Volkswagen’s van-derived pickups, the Taro used a traditional ladder-frame chassis with the cab and cargo bed mounted separately. This construction, together with its straightforward mechanical layout and practical load area, reflected its role as a durable work vehicle rather than a leisure-focused pickup.
The model is mainly known for combining Volkswagen branding and sales support with proven Toyota pickup engineering. It occupied a relatively specialised position in the Volkswagen commercial range and was produced in modest numbers compared with the company’s vans. Today, it remains an uncommon example of cross-manufacturer cooperation in Volkswagen’s pickup history.
