About Volkswagen Sharan

The Volkswagen Sharan is a large multi-purpose vehicle developed for families and other users needing generous passenger and luggage space. Introduced in 1995, it was Volkswagen’s first large MPV and was produced at the Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal. The original model resulted from a development and manufacturing partnership between Volkswagen and Ford.

Two generations were produced. The first remained in production until 2010 and received several updates during its long lifespan. The second generation introduced a more modern platform, standard sliding rear doors and seats that folded into the floor. Depending on specification and market, the Sharan offered five, six or seven seats.

Petrol and diesel engines were available, along with manual and automatic or DSG transmissions. Most versions used front-wheel drive, while selected models featured syncro or 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Equipment levels and special editions varied by country and model year.

Within Volkswagen’s range, the Sharan served as the brand’s spacious large MPV, valued for flexible seating, easy cabin access, substantial carrying capacity and passenger-car road manners. It found a strong family market in Europe and was also used as a business vehicle in parts of Asia. Production ended in October 2022 after more than one million examples had been built.
