About Volkswagen Santana
The Volkswagen Santana is a medium-size passenger car introduced in 1981 as a four-door saloon derived from the second-generation Passat. It was positioned as a more formal and better-equipped alternative, with conventional three-box styling, a spacious interior and a large boot. Although its initial European run was relatively short, the Santana name developed a much longer life in other regions.
Production and assembly extended to markets including China, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Argentina and South Africa. The model became particularly important in China, where local assembly began in 1983 and the original design remained in production until 2012. It helped establish Volkswagen as a major passenger-car manufacturer there and became widely associated with family, business and fleet transport.
The Santana was primarily a saloon, although estate versions were also produced in some markets. Its development differed by region rather than following one consistent global generation cycle. Notable Chinese variations included the Santana 2000, Santana 3000 and Santana Vista, followed by a new Santana generation introduced for 2013. Depending on market and period, the nameplate covered vehicles with different styling, equipment and mechanical specifications. Across these versions, the Santana was known mainly for practical packaging, straightforward engineering and suitability for long-term everyday or fleet use.
