About Volkswagen Quantum
The Volkswagen Quantum was a mid-size car based on the second-generation Passat, known as the B2 platform. In North America, the Quantum replaced the Dasher and was sold from the 1982 through 1988 model years. It sat above Volkswagen’s compact models, offering more passenger and luggage space in a conventional family-car format.
North American versions included a short-lived three-door hatchback marketed as a coupe, a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon. Depending on year and trim, the range used four- or five-cylinder petrol engines, while a turbo-diesel was also available. The best-known variation is the Quantum Syncro wagon, which combined a five-cylinder engine with full-time four-wheel drive.
The name had a different role in Brazil. Introduced in 1985 as the Santana Quantum and later sold simply as the Quantum, it was the station-wagon companion to the locally produced Santana sedan. This version remained B2-based but received major styling, equipment and mechanical updates during a production run that continued into the early 2000s.
Rather than forming a sequence of unrelated generations, Quantum models were regional developments of one core Volkswagen design. They are chiefly known for practical interiors, generous cargo capacity, longitudinal engine layouts and, in Syncro form, unusual all-weather capability for an estate car of the period.
