About Volkswagen Polo
The Volkswagen Polo is a small hatchback positioned below the Golf in the brand’s passenger-car range. Introduced in 1975, it became one of Volkswagen’s main entry-level models and a long-running competitor in the European supermini class. More than 20 million examples were produced worldwide during its first 50 years.
Six generations of the conventional Polo appeared between 1975 and 2017, with regular updates extending the sixth generation. Although best known as a three- or five-door hatchback, the range has also included coupé, estate and saloon forms, the latter sold in some periods as the Derby. Other variations have included the rugged-looking CrossPolo, efficiency-focused BlueMotion, performance-oriented G40 and GTI, and limited editions such as the Harlekin.
Production expanded from Germany to several international locations, including Spain, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and India, reflecting the Polo’s broad market reach. It is known for compact dimensions, efficient use of cabin space, straightforward controls and a more mature driving character than many city cars. The Polo name also entered the electric era with the ID. Polo in 2026, while retaining its established role as a practical, accessible Volkswagen.
