About Volkswagen Phaeton
The Volkswagen Phaeton is a full-size luxury saloon produced from 2002 to 2016. Developed as the Volkswagen brand’s flagship, it moved the marque into a segment normally associated with established premium manufacturers. Assembly took place largely by hand at the Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany, reflecting the model’s emphasis on build quality and craftsmanship.
Only one generation reached production, although it received substantial updates in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2013. The range included standard- and long-wheelbase bodies, with the extended version offering additional rear-seat space. Specifications varied by market and model year, with six-, eight-, ten- and twelve-cylinder petrol or diesel engines available during its lifetime. High-end versions included the W12 petrol model and V10 TDI diesel.
The Phaeton is known for its understated styling, spacious and carefully finished cabin, advanced climate-control systems and strong long-distance comfort. Adaptive air suspension was a defining feature, while many versions used 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Its discreet appearance distinguished it from more overtly styled luxury rivals. Production ended in March 2016 after 84,235 vehicles, and a proposed second-generation model did not enter series production.
