About Volkswagen Magotan
The Volkswagen Magotan is a mid-size sedan developed for the Chinese market and produced by FAW-Volkswagen in Changchun. Introduced in 2007, it serves as China’s counterpart to the European Volkswagen Passat while incorporating specifications and features tailored to local preferences. Within Volkswagen’s Chinese range, it sits above compact sedans such as the Bora and Sagitar and is aimed at family, company and executive-car users.
Four main generations have appeared. The original model was based on the Passat B6, followed by the longer-wheelbase B7L in 2011 and B8L in 2016. The B9 generation was launched in July 2024, continuing the Magotan as a saloon while the related European Passat moved to an estate-only format. Updates across the generations have brought more cabin space, digital displays, connected functions and driver-assistance technology.
Most versions use turbocharged petrol engines with dual-clutch transmissions. The range has included several equipment grades and R-Line models with sportier styling, while the B8-era Magotan GTE added a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The model is particularly known for its spacious rear seating, restrained design and emphasis on long-distance comfort. It remains one of FAW-Volkswagen’s principal conventional sedans and a long-established competitor in China’s mainstream mid-size segment.
