About Volkswagen LT

The Volkswagen LT was a large light commercial vehicle produced from 1975 to 2006. Positioned above the Transporter, it gave Volkswagen a presence between conventional vans and heavier trucks. The name came from the German “Lasten-Transporter”, meaning load transporter, while numbers such as LT 28, LT 35 and LT 55 indicated approximate gross weight classes.

Two generations were offered. The original LT used a compact cab-over layout with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, creating substantial cargo space within relatively modest exterior dimensions. The second generation arrived in 1996, developed in partnership with Mercedes-Benz. It adopted a short bonnet, lower cab access and modern Volkswagen diesel engines, while retaining the practical, work-focused character of the earlier model.

The range included panel vans, window vans, minibuses, chassis cabs, flatbeds and double-cab versions, with several wheelbases and roof heights. Selected first-generation models were also available with four-wheel drive, and both generations served as bases for ambulances, utility vehicles and motorhomes.

The LT is mainly known for efficient packaging, a broad choice of configurations and suitability for specialist conversions. Its long production run established it as Volkswagen’s principal large van before the Crafter replaced it in 2006.
