About Volkswagen Lamando
The Volkswagen Lamando is a China-focused compact car developed and produced by SAIC Volkswagen. Introduced in 2014 and built from November that year, it was conceived as a lower, wider and more style-led alternative to the brand’s conventional compact saloons. It occupies a niche between mainstream family cars and larger, more formal models such as the Passat.
The first generation was a four-door saloon based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform. Most versions used turbocharged petrol engines, with manual or DSG transmissions depending on specification. The Lamando GTS, introduced in 2016, added a 2.0-litre TSI engine and sportier exterior and interior details. Although designed mainly for China, this generation was also officially offered in the Philippines.
A redesigned second generation arrived in 2022 as the Lamando L. It adopted MQB Evo underpinnings, a longer wheelbase and a five-door liftback body with frameless doors, improving luggage access while retaining a coupe-like roofline. A 2025 update refreshed the range and brought back the GTS performance version.
Within Volkswagen’s Chinese range, the Lamando is known for combining everyday compact-car usability with more expressive styling than the brand’s traditional saloons. Notable qualities include its broad stance, practical cabin, turbocharged engines and distinctive fastback profile.
