About Volkswagen Iltis
The Volkswagen Iltis, factory code Type 183, is a compact light utility and off-road vehicle developed primarily for military use. Production began in 1978 at Audi’s Ingolstadt plant, with the Volkswagen name applied to a design created as a successor to the DKW Munga for the West German armed forces.
Built as a single generation, the Iltis used a simple open body, four-wheel drive and mechanical components drawn from the Volkswagen Group. Its selectable drive system, low off-road gear and locking differentials gave it strong ability over difficult terrain. The standard model had a 1.7-litre petrol engine, while a 1.6-litre turbo diesel version was produced in smaller numbers during 1987 and 1988.
Most examples were military vehicles, including utility, communications, reconnaissance and ambulance variations. A better-equipped civilian version appeared in 1979, but its high price and functional character limited demand. German production ended in 1982, after which Bombardier built modified Iltis models under licence in Canada and Belgium until 1988.
The Iltis occupied a specialist position in Volkswagen’s range rather than serving as a mainstream passenger SUV. It is best known for its robust, compact construction, its 1980 Paris–Dakar Rally victory and the influence of its four-wheel-drive development on Audi’s early quattro system.
