About Volkswagen ID. ERA 5S
The Volkswagen ID. ERA 5S is a China-focused mid-size plug-in hybrid sedan developed and produced by the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture. It entered the Chinese market in August 2026 as the second member of the ID. ERA range, following the ID. ERA 9X, and as the first saloon in this locally developed new-energy vehicle family.
The model is a conventional four-door, five-seat sedan measuring 4,836 mm long, with a 2,766 mm wheelbase. Its plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 130 kW electric drive motor and a single-speed DHT transmission. A 19.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery provides a claimed electric range of up to 160 km under the CLTC test cycle.
Only the first generation has been offered so far. The launch range comprises five variants, mainly differentiated by equipment and driver-assistance content. Key cabin features include an 8.8-inch instrument display and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen.
Within Volkswagen’s Chinese line-up, the ID. ERA 5S is positioned as an accessible electrified alternative to established combustion-engined sedans. It is notable for combining long electric-only capability with petrol-powered flexibility, streamlined styling and China-developed connected technology.
