About Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact family car introduced in 1974 as the successor to the Beetle. Its front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and practical hatchback body helped establish the format followed by many later compact cars. Production began at Volkswagen’s main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, and later expanded to other countries.
Eight generations have been produced, with the eighth launched in 2019 and substantially updated in 2024. Across these generations, the Golf has retained familiar proportions while adopting newer safety systems, digital technology and more efficient powertrains. Petrol and diesel engines have been offered widely, alongside mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions in selected generations and markets.
The range has included three-door and five-door hatchbacks, the Golf Variant or Estate, and earlier Cabriolet models. Important derivatives include the GTI performance hatch, diesel-powered GTD, plug-in hybrid GTE and all-wheel-drive Golf R. The e-Golf was an electric version of the seventh-generation model.
Positioned between the smaller Polo and Volkswagen’s larger passenger cars and SUVs, the Golf is a core model in the brand’s line-up. More than 37 million examples had been built by 2024. It is chiefly known for combining compact exterior dimensions with a versatile cabin, balanced road manners and a broad choice of equipment and engines.
