About Volkswagen Crafter
The Volkswagen Crafter is a large light commercial vehicle introduced in 2006 as the successor to the Volkswagen LT. It sits above the Transporter in Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ range and is intended for higher-capacity cargo, passenger transport and specialist conversion work.
The first generation was developed in cooperation with Daimler and manufactured alongside the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Volkswagen introduced the independently developed second generation in 2016, with production based at a purpose-built plant in Września, Poland.
Crafter configurations vary by market and include panel vans, chassis cabs, crew cabs and factory or third-party conversions such as dropside trucks, minibuses, refrigerated vehicles and motorhomes. Multiple wheelbases, roof heights and weight classes allow the vehicle to serve businesses ranging from parcel delivery and construction to emergency services and long-distance transport. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and 4MOTION all-wheel drive have been offered, together with manual and automatic transmissions.
The Crafter is known for its broad range of body and drivetrain combinations, practical cargo space and car-like driving environment. Later models place greater emphasis on driver-assistance systems, connectivity, ergonomics and fleet operation. As Volkswagen’s principal large van, it competes in the same market segment as the Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Renault Master.
