About Volkswagen Corrado
The Volkswagen Corrado is a compact, front-wheel-drive 2+2 coupé produced from 1988 to 1995. Based on Volkswagen Golf II underpinnings but extensively reworked, it was assembled by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany. Volkswagen positioned it above the contemporary Scirocco II as a more specialised sports model rather than a direct replacement.
Offered in a single generation under the factory code Type 53i, the Corrado used a three-door liftback body that provided more everyday utility than many traditional coupés. Its best-known design feature is the speed-activated rear spoiler. Production updates included revised front-end styling to accommodate six-cylinder engines and a refreshed interior later in the model run.
Engine availability varied by year and market. Major versions included naturally aspirated 8-valve and 16-valve four-cylinder models, the supercharged 1.8 G60 and the range-topping VR6. The G60 showcased Volkswagen’s distinctive G-Lader supercharger, while the narrow-angle VR6 brought six-cylinder performance to the compact coupé.
With fewer than 100,000 built, the Corrado remained a niche vehicle within Volkswagen’s range. It is chiefly known for combining compact dimensions, practical hatchback packaging, distinctive styling and advanced performance features for its period.
