About Volkswagen Citi Golf
The Volkswagen Citi Golf is a compact five-door hatchback produced by Volkswagen South Africa from 1984 to 2009. It retained the basic platform and body of the first-generation Golf after the newer Golf Mk2 entered production, allowing Volkswagen to continue offering a smaller and more affordable model alongside later Golf generations. Production took place at the company’s Uitenhage plant.
Although sold for 25 years, the Citi Golf did not progress through separate generations. Instead, its original Golf Mk1 design received regular mechanical, equipment, trim and interior updates. The range included basic models and numerous named variations, including the Citi Sport, CTi, Chico, Citi Life, CitiR, CitiRox and other limited editions. Petrol engines of different capacities were offered, with fuel injection replacing carburettors in the final years.
The Citi Golf occupied Volkswagen’s entry-level position in South Africa and became closely associated with affordable personal transport. It is known for compact dimensions, straightforward engineering, low weight and easy maintenance. Sportier versions added stronger engines and distinctive styling while preserving the practical five-door format. Its unusually long production run made it one of the most recognisable Volkswagen models developed specifically for the South African market.
