About Volkswagen California
The Volkswagen California is a purpose-designed camper van sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. Introduced in 1988 on the rear-engined T3 platform, the original model was developed with camper specialist Westfalia. It subsequently evolved through the front-engined T4, T5, T6 and updated T6.1 generations. From the T5 era, production was centred at Volkswagen’s Hanover operation in Germany.
Earlier Californias shared their basic structure with the Transporter. The latest generation takes a different route, using the long version of the Multivan and its passenger-vehicle platform. This provides a more car-like basis while retaining the compact camper format associated with the name.
Versions vary by market. Beach, Beach Tour and Beach Camper models emphasise flexible seating and simpler camping equipment, while Coast and Ocean versions provide more complete kitchen and living facilities. Typical features include a pop-up roof, convertible sleeping areas, rotating front seats, storage solutions and integrated camper controls. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains have been offered, with front- or all-wheel drive depending on specification.
Within Volkswagen’s camping range, the California sits between the smaller Caddy California and the larger Grand California motorhome. It is best known for combining everyday usability with accommodation for touring and short camping trips.
