About Volkswagen Beetle
The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the brand’s most recognisable models, known for its rounded body, simple engineering and cultural significance. The original Volkswagen Type 1 entered civilian series production in Germany in 1945. It was a compact two-door car with an air-cooled rear engine and rear-wheel drive, sold mainly as a saloon and cabriolet. Production spread worldwide, with the final original Beetle built in Puebla, Mexico, in 2003.
Volkswagen revived the idea with the New Beetle, produced from 1997 to 2010. Unlike the original, it used contemporary front-engined, front-wheel-drive compact-car technology. Its retro-inspired shape made it a style-focused alternative within the range. The Cabriolet arrived in 2003, while notable variations included turbocharged versions and the limited, high-performance, all-wheel-drive RSi.
A further interpretation, marketed simply as the Beetle, followed from 2011 to 2019. It had a lower, wider profile than the New Beetle and was offered as a coupé-style hatchback and Cabriolet. Engines, trims and special editions varied by market, with Dune and Final Edition models among the best-known. Positioned alongside Volkswagen’s mainstream compact cars, the Beetle prioritised distinctive design and personalisation. Across its different eras, it is associated with an unmistakable silhouette, practical everyday character and a lasting connection to Volkswagen’s identity.
