About Volkswagen Atlas
The Volkswagen Atlas is a large crossover SUV developed primarily for North American buyers. Introduced for the 2018 model year, it gave Volkswagen a three-row family vehicle positioned above the Tiguan. Production takes place in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the model is also sold in selected markets outside the United States under the Atlas or Teramont name.
The original generation established the Atlas as a practical mainstream SUV with seating for up to seven, generous cargo capacity and a spacious cabin. Front-wheel drive and 4MOTION all-wheel drive have been offered, while powertrain choices have included turbocharged four-cylinder engines and, on earlier versions, a VR6. Updates for the 2021 model year revised the styling, and a more extensive 2024 refresh upgraded the interior, technology and powertrain range. An all-new second generation was unveiled for the 2027 model year.
The Atlas Cross Sport joined the range for 2020 as a shorter, five-seat variation with a more sloping roofline and sportier appearance. Across both body styles, the Atlas is known for passenger space, flexible storage, straightforward family usability and available towing capability. It remains Volkswagen’s largest conventional SUV in the North American lineup and competes in the mainstream midsize SUV segment.
