About Volkswagen Apollo
The Volkswagen Apollo was a Brazilian two-door saloon produced from 1990 to 1992. Developed during the Autolatina partnership between Volkswagen and Ford, it used shared engineering but received Volkswagen-specific styling, trim and powertrain choices. It occupied the middle of the local range, positioned between the smaller Voyage and the larger Santana.
Only one generation was made. The Apollo launched in GL and better-equipped GLS forms, while the limited VIP version followed in 1991. All versions used Volkswagen’s transversely mounted 1.8-litre AP engine, offered for petrol or ethanol. Independent front and rear suspension contributed to its road manners, while the three-box body provided a notably large 570-litre luggage compartment.
The model is mainly known as an example of early-1990s platform sharing in Brazil and as one of Volkswagen’s shortest-lived regional cars. Its clean exterior, flush-mounted glass and lack of traditional roof gutters gave it a relatively modern appearance for the period. With more than 50,000 units sold before production ended, the Apollo had a modest market presence but remains a distinctive part of Volkswagen do Brasil’s saloon lineage.
