About Volkswagen Ameo
The Volkswagen Ameo is a compact four-door sedan developed specifically for India and introduced in 2016. Based closely on the fifth-generation Polo, it measures just under four metres long and was designed for India’s tax-favoured subcompact-sedan category. It was manufactured at Volkswagen’s Chakan plant near Pune.
Within Volkswagen’s Indian range, the Ameo sat between the Polo hatchback and the larger Vento sedan. It combined the Polo’s basic architecture and cabin design with a separate boot, giving buyers a smaller and less expensive sedan option. The model remained in a single generation, although its engine range and equipment were revised during production.
Early cars used a 1.2-litre petrol engine, later replaced by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit. A 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel was also offered. Five-speed manual transmissions were available, while selected diesel versions featured a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. Trim levels included Trendline, Comfortline and Highline-based variants.
The Ameo is particularly associated with its diesel-DSG combination, compact dimensions and equipment uncommon in its segment, including available cruise control, automatic climate control and rain-sensing wipers. Production ended in 2020 when the model was not upgraded for India’s BS6 emissions standards. No second generation followed.
