About Volkswagen 1500
The Volkswagen 1500 sold in Argentina was a locally renamed version of the Dodge 1500, itself derived from the British Hillman Avenger. Volkswagen acquired Chrysler-Fevre Argentina in 1980 and initially continued the car under transitional Dodge-Volkswagen branding. It became the Volkswagen 1500 in 1982 and remained in production until 1990.
This compact family car used a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Argentine buyers could choose a four-door saloon or the five-door Rural estate. The range included 1.5- and 1.8-litre petrol engines, generally paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment-based versions included Full and later Básico models, while a five-speed gearbox became available near the end of production. The Rural and 1.8-litre variants were discontinued before the saloon.
Rather than passing through separate generations, the 1500 followed one long-running design with styling, interior and equipment updates. It occupied an accessible position in Volkswagen’s early Argentine range and provided continuity while the company established local production of its own models. The 1500 is chiefly known for straightforward engineering, practical passenger and luggage space, mechanical durability and ease of maintenance.
